Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

The food is good, I wish it was more authentic and more to choose from. The price is a little high for Mexican food in my opinion. The salsa and chips are excellent. The staff is great, it's very clean, and the draft beer is on point. My place to go when I'm craving Mexican and don't want a long drive.

Awesome good! Great service!! Very authentic! Will be back. Your waitress dresses in authentic dresses!

Salsa was good. Enchiladas were very flavorful and the kids enjoyed them. We split a large carnitas pork burrito for lunch which is the weekend special and it was awesome :)

Time for an update...I was really surprised to see Carmelitas down to 3 stars, until we stopped tonight. Hopefully, Jose, the manager reads this and makes some changes before they have no business at all. This has been a twice a month stop for the last two years. Although we have seen service slip a bit over the last six months, I thought it was just a bad spell. But it has gotten so bad, I'm not going to waste my money here despite the decent food. Service is slow, but on a Wednesday night with two guests in the restaurant it shouldn't have been this bad. While our server sat at a table in the other section we waited and waited and waited and waited. She was more interested in watching TV and drinking soda, she truly neglected her job. We observed a gentleman come in and be seated.. He waited nearly ten minutes by himself. The rude server told him that he could not get the fajita special for some reason...but that he could pay full price. As he got up to walk out, he commented that he understands why there were only two people in at dinner time. He will probably never return, over what?? a $2 difference?? Dinner was ok...I asked for raw onions on my taco salad...apparently that is an extra...50 cents extra for 6 to 8 small pieces of onion...and there was no lettuce in the salad. Dinner was still tasty Carmelitas style which is why they get the two stars.

Rude staff, The mole sauce is from a jar, Canned tomatoes in the salsa. Really, who wants any of that? Didn't this place get shut down on dirty dining?

The hubby and I were looking for something different when we came upon this little gem of a restaurant. We walked in and in no time at all we were greeted by a lovely young lady who seated us and brought us some refreshing tasty margaritas. We munched on chips and salsa as we chatted and waited for our dinner. when our dinner arrived it looked yummy. I had the del Ray burrito. It was delicious and properly but together. Overall we had a lovely experience at this quaint little Mexican restaurant.

We decided to give Carmelitas a try. We were quickly seated. We were approached by the server in a timely fashion but had a hard time hearing her. There was a large party sitting near by and they were having a good time but the place was very loud. Chips and salsa were brought with our drinks. Our food came very quickly piping hot but a bit bland for my liking. The service was great, fast and friendly. All in all it was good but not great.

The food here is amazing! It far exceeded my expectations. They also have great specials on margaritas which is great if you want a drink with your meal. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are always friendly. Portions are large, I always end up bringing food back home.

I just moved down from the DC area and I noticed this place last weekend on the way back from the Harley Dealer. I stopped in tonight for the first time and man did I have a great meal. I had the steak fajitas tonight and for $13 you will not find a better tasting Tex-Mex meal. Probably the best deal for really good food in the Trinity area. Devon was my waiter and he provided excellent service. I really prefer non-chain restaurants because they try harder. I like this place.

I give it an A for average. They got rid of their homemade fresh tortillas. That was the only thing there that made this place worth going to. They were awesome.

Rude staff, The food is decent. We drive out to Pablanos instead.

Service is awesome! The desserts are really good. I've been here 2 times and my main course has always been just okay. Nice Mexican food for a decent price but nothing out of this world.

Best Mexican food in the area, huge selection! Maybe some of the neg reviews are from people expecting Taco bell. They have different spice levels, various choices on the menu. Only complaint is the lack of more desert choices.

this place was the worst Mexican food I have ever had in my life. Tasted like they took it all out of a can and dumped it on the plate and not to mention how disgustingly dirty it was. The service was terrible we had our waitress leave in the middle of serving us to go clean and made another server wait on us. I will never recommend this place to anyone. I would rather eat Taco Bell.

Ive tried other Mexican food restaurants in the NPR area and Carmelitas has consistently been my favorite. Good portions, inexpensive and a variety of items to choose from. Ive never left disappointed. Try the flan. Its awesome.

How does this place only have three reviews? Carmelita's is our standby. The menu is consistent, the service is great, and the prices are reasonable. I can honestly say that I've never been disappointed by the food. My boyfriend, a Mexican food snob, enjoys it well enough too. Perhaps it's not the most authentic Mexican food, but it's delicious and inexpensive.

Lets just say never again. The food was bland and really not that hot. My wife and I were not impressed at all. We had went here about 2 years ago and the food was a lot better and the portions were better. I know next time we will be going to Estella's in New Port Richey where they care about the food and the service.

I have to drive past about 5 Mexican Restaurants to get to Carmelitas but every time I do I remember how worth it is. The service is absolutely right on consistently as is their delicious food. I have had their burritos and enchiladas and they are both very good. My girlfriend always gets the quesadillas which is something she always orders when she can and says that they are by far the best she has ever had. Tonight we also ordered the sopadas for desert and it was plenty for all of us to split. It is normally served with honey but Michele suggested we try it with caramel and it was indeed yummy. The restaurant is always very clean as well. Tonight we went with another couple, Michele waited on us and from the very minute we arrived she was a delight in every way.

Very quaint place Mexican style. Love the chips and salsa which come mild or hot. My girlfriend is a big fan of the spicey salsa...and it is really HOT! We always order the same dishes. She gets the vegetarian combo which comes with a cheese or spinach enchilada, chile relleno, bean tostada and choice of two sides. What a feast! I am a pretty simple guy, so I go with the cheese enchiladas. The sauce is delectable. The staff is very friendly and upbeat (not dragging themselves around like some places you go). To top it off, you get a lot of food for a great price. In order to get five stars, the restaurant should spruce up the cleanliness. The last time I was there, the floor had shreads of lettuce and some of the empty tables were not cleaned off. Call me a neat freak, but in my book cleanliness is next to Godliness!

HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! Worst Mexican food I've ever tried in my life! You couldn't pay me to eat here again! I understand in Florida there isn't good Mexican food but I would except something.....anything at this place to be somewhat homemade! EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING is straight out of a can! It was a terrible all around experience and we couldn't have gotten out of there fast enough! Reminds me of a restaurant that should be on restaurant impossible! Beware!!!!!! It is worth spending a night at home cooking your own Mexican food.......even if you have never cooked in your life, I guarantee it'll be better than what you would get at this dump!

Went to this place because it's closer to our house than another Mexican place in town we go to. We had heard good things, and perhaps that was the problem. Our expectations were too high. We hoped that Carmelita's would at least be worthy of going to if we didn't want to drive further to our usual spot, but boy were we disappointed! The fact that there are good reviews on here is due to the fact that there is such a lack of Mexican restaurants in the NPR area that no one knows any better. Best around? I don't think so.
(2)Virginia G.
Maybe it's the best mexican in this area but that only speaks of the lack of decent mexican restaurants around. Carmelitas food at every location is bland generic american mexican food. THeir establishments are always less then clean and the food is just plain boring. If I want mexican I want authentic with some flavor maybe even a little kick, not this watered down generic american version thereof.
